ABOUT THE LAREDO CLIMATE COHORT

RGISC will develop the first ever Laredo Climate Cohort and recruit a new generation of border youth advocates in order to train them to better understand the very real impacts that climate change is having at a local level in Laredo. The Climate Cohort will spearhead two climate initiatives that are critically needed in our community:

  • Solar-Ready Warehouses
  • Equitable Tree Canopy
We will do this by training the Cohort through a series of 6 workshops to strengthen skills in community organizing, public speaking and leadership, communicative art, and storytelling through video. We will be inviting speakers from the community and other experts to lead workshop sessions.

Session topics will be as described below:

1st Session: Climate Politics and Impacts
2nd Session: Environmental Justice and Climate Action
3rd Session: Solar-Ready Warehouses & Equitable Tree Canopy
4th Session: A Green Transition for South Texas
5th Session: Skills-Building
6th Session: Climate Healing and Hope

There are other events like field trips and a film screening with the Laredo Film Society for "Don't Look Up " (2021) that are also included in the schedule.

These workshops will take place during the months of August and October and will be held from 9:30AM to 2:30PM with a free lunch included.

The program will culminate in a community action at a City Council Meeting and a graduation ceremony where students will receive a certification and their scholarship.

We're attaching the program schedule below which can still be subject to change.
